Direct answer: Yes. Excessive pressure, a concentrated nozzle, inconsistent distance, or cleaning weak and deteriorated concrete can etch the surface or expose aggregate. Sound, adequately cured concrete can often be pressure cleaned safely when the operator matches the equipment and technique to the slab and tests an inconspicuous area first.

What increases the risk of damage?
Risk is higher when concrete is:
- New, weak, flaking, cracked, or already deteriorated
- Cleaned with a narrow, concentrated spray too close to the surface
- Cleaned unevenly, leaving visible lines
- Covered by a coating or sealer with separate maintenance instructions
- Tested only in a prominent area instead of an inconspicuous spot
SIMPSON’s nozzle guidance says the wrong nozzle can damage surfaces. It recommends beginning farther from the surface and moving closer gradually while watching for damage.
Is pressure washing appropriate for concrete?
Pressure washing is a recognized cleaning method for suitable concrete. QUIKRETE’s patio-cleaning guidance recommends a 2,500 PSI pressure washer for extremely stubborn dirt and stains, together with protective equipment and protection for nearby plants and the house.
That recommendation does not mean every slab should receive the same pressure. Pressure measured at the machine is only one factor. Nozzle angle, water flow, working distance, surface cleaner selection, dwell time, cleaning solution, and concrete condition all affect the result.
Why pretreatment and even cleaning matter
Allowing an appropriate cleaning solution time to work can reduce the need to rely on aggressive pressure alone. On larger flatwork, a correctly sized surface cleaner can produce a more even pattern than random wand passes. Edges and stubborn spots still require controlled technique.
Important limitation
Cleaning removes surface contaminants; it does not repair spalling, cracks, failing sealer, oil that has penetrated deeply, or structural defects. Some stains improve without disappearing completely. New concrete should be evaluated according to the installer’s curing and maintenance instructions before pressure cleaning.
